Secondary students enjoyed a 2 day workshop to learn about  the ethical and effective use of AI in their academic and personal pursuits. This workshop was a proactive step towards integrating cutting-edge technology into education, aligning with the IB's commitment to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.

We teamed up with TMI, a local specialised agency in digital literacy. Throughout the two days, students were exposed to specific guidelines on the responsible use of AI tools in education. The focus was on leveraging AI for brainstorming to generate ideas while ensuring students critically evaluate these ideas and provide their own analysis. ISU, along with the IB integrity policies, underscores the necessity for students to reference any AI content used. To avoid violating academic integrity, students learned how to correctly reference AI tools in their work, including the use of quotation marks and the full reference in a bibliography.

Encouraging students to use AI to become better inquirers

Given the ISU emphasis on developing well-rounded, ethical, and intellectually rigorous students, based on the IB Learner Profile attributes, we used these attributes to explain how to responsibly using AI. That is why we actively encourage ISU students  to become better inquirers.  Using AI for brainstorming and generating ideas supports the IB Learner Profile's aim to develop curious and inquisitive learners. Strict policies regarding citing and referencing to maintain academic integrity aims to develop principled students. Students who reflect the Learner Profile's commitment to using AI with integrity and honesty, taking responsibility for their own actions. Students are also being risk-takers as engaging with new technologies like AI encourages students to approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with determination and resilience. In short, while we recognise the potential of AI to enhance learning, we also insist on a disciplined approach to its application following the IB academic integrity policies.

Navigating the complexities of an increasingly digital world

By setting clear guidelines for the responsible incorporation of AI tools in the learning process, we not only prepare our students to navigate the complexities of an increasingly digital world but also ensure that the IB Learner Profile is reflected in this digital engagement. This policy underscores the importance of nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only technologically adept but also principled, reflective, and committed to making a positive impact in the world.
